Yankees' German pulled from no-hitter in 1st career start
Domingo German's first career major-league start was certainly a good one.
The New York Yankees rookie right-hander tossed six no-hit innings against the Cleveland Indians on Sunday before he was removed due to an elevated pitch count.
German struck out nine while walking two on 84 pitches. He fanned Jason Kipnis to end the sixth, but Yankees manager Aaron Boone brought in Dellin Betances to pitch the seventh.
Betances would keep the no-hitter intact through the seventh before allowing a leadoff single to open the eighth.
When asked about pulling German during a no-hitter Boone felt comfortable in making the move because the rookie was well-past the pitch count the team had in mind for him.
"He had gone past a little where we had wanted him to go. I was hoping best case for five (innings) and a little north of 70 (pitches), but he was so efficient," the skipper explained to reporters. "It was an easy call to take him out ... To get six innings out of him like that. Man, what more could you ask for."
The 25-year-old German had made 12 appearances out of the pen for the Yankees over the past two years, with five coming this season. He was moved into the rotation after Jordan Montgomery landed on the disabled list. In 14 1/3 innings this season in relief, German had allowed six runs and seven walks while striking out 18.
