Mets' Lagares expected to miss rest of season with toe injury
The New York Mets placed outfielder Juan Lagares on the 10-day disabled list Friday due to a torn ligament in the big toe on his left foot.
After initially being diagnosed with a hyperextended toe, an MRI revealed he'd completely torn the plantar plate, a supporting ligament. He is scheduled to undergo surgery next week, and is expected to miss the rest of the season.
Lagares suffered the injury when he ran into the outfield fence in Wednesday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays. Jay Bruce pinch hit for him in the ninth inning.
The 29-year-old is the third Mets position player to land on the disabled list in May, following fellow outfielder Yoenis Cespedes and third baseman Todd Frazier.
Lagares was mostly used in a reserve role this season, but he excelled at the plate when given playing time. He hit .339/.375/.390 (114 OPS+) in 64 plate appearances.
With Lagares and Cespedes on the DL, the Mets will likely use Brandon Nimmo and Michael Conforto in center field with Bruce playing in right.
