Mariners select Stetson right-hander Logan Gilbert
With the 14th pick in the 2018 MLB amateur draft, the Seattle Mariners selected Stetson University right-hander Logan Gilbert.
The 21-year-old became the first player to win Atlantic Sun Conference Pitcher of the Year honors in back-to-back years (2017, 2018), and owns the school record for strikeouts in a season (143).
Gilbert became the first Stetson pitcher to be selected in the first round, although the program has produced major-league aces Corey Kluber and Jacob deGrom.

MLB.com money quote: "While Gilbert was sitting in the mid-90s and touching 97 mph over the summer, he was pitching more in the 91-to-92-mph range and touching 94 mph early on, though was creeping back toward the mid-90s late in the spring. At times his two breaking balls can blend together, but his slider is better than his slow "get me over" curveball. His changeup might be his best pitch."
