Padres draft high school lefty Ryan Weathers 7th overall
With the 7th pick in the 2018 MLB amateur draft, the San Diego Padres selected Ryan Weathers, a left-handed pitcher out of Tennessee.
The son of David Weathers, a former MLB journeyman who pitched with nine teams over a 19-year career, Ryan is committed to Vanderbilt. The 18-year-old boasts a well-rounded three-pitch repertoire that makes up for lacking any one standout offering. Vanderbilt is expected to give Weathers the opportunity to play two ways if he proves elusive to sign out of the draft.

MLB.com money quote: "Loretto (Tenn.) High produced Johhny Jones, the No. 5 overall pick in the 1967 draft, and David Weathers, who pitched 19 years in the Majors. Weathers' son Ryan has the potential to be better than both of them as a lefty with the pitches and polish to work in the front half of a big-league rotation."
