Giants draft son of former AL MVP George Bell in 13th round
The San Francisco Giants hope they found a gem late in this year's MLB draft thanks to an award-winning bloodline.
San Francisco used its 13th-round draft pick (376th overall) in the 2018 draft to select George Bell Jr., an outfielder from Connors State College in Oklahoma and the son of former American League MVP George Bell.
Bell Jr. was born in the Dominican Republic but went unsigned as a teenager, prompting his move to the collegiate level at Connors State, which competes in the National Junior College Athletic Association. As a sophomore in 2018, he hit .360/.484/.512 with 11 extra-base hits, 51 RBIs, and 34 walks across 172 at-bats. He also tallied at least one hit in all four of the Cowboys' NJCAA playoff games last month.
Defensively, Bell Jr. primarily patrolled center field at Connors State, according to Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic.
His father spent 12 years in the majors with three teams but is most famous for his nine seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays. A three-time All-Star, Bell's best season came in 1987 when he hit .308/.352/.605 with 47 homers and a league-leading 134 RBIs en route to becoming the first Blue Jays player to win the MVP award. His name and No. 11 are honored on the team's Level of Excellence at Rogers Centre.
