Phillie Phanatic shoots hot dog into fan's face, sending her to hospital
Hot dogs can hurt if you're not careful.
During Monday night's game between the Philadelphia Phillies and the St. Louis Cardinals, Phillies fan Kathy McVay was injured after being hit by a hot dog shot into the air by the club's famous mascot, the Phillie Phanatic.
McVay told Sarah Bloomquist of ABC 6 Philadelphia that she couldn't take cover while sitting in her seat behind home plate, and was then struck in the head by the flying frankfurter held together using duct tape.
"It just came out of nowhere. And hard," McVay said.
"And then the next thing I know he shot it in our direction, and bam! It hit me like a ton of bricks. My glasses flew."
McVay was taken to the hospital and diagnosed with a small hematoma in her eye, along with soreness and bruises. She did not suffer a concussion.
Although she left the ballpark injured, McVay said she has no plans to pursue legal action against the Phillies. She did, however, caution other fans to "be aware" of flying objects while at the ballpark.
For their part, Phillies management has already contacted McVay to apologize and offer her free tickets to a future game. Sources close to the team also told Bloomquist that the Phanatic "feels terrible" about causing her injuries.
