The Seattle Mariners have shut down right-hander Felix Hernandez until after the All-Star Break, placing the 32-year-old on the 10-day disabled list Tuesday due to lower back stiffness.
Hernandez, whose stint on the DL is retroactive to Friday, first tweaked his back while working out in Baltimore in late-June, and he has battled through discomfort in his past few starts.
The trip to the DL caps a disappointing first half for Hernandez, who owns a career-worst 5.13 ERA (77 ERA+) and 1.37 WHIP through 19 starts.
In a corresponding move, the Mariners recalled right-hander Nick Rumbelow from Triple-A.
