Nats send All-Star closer Doolittle to DL with toe inflammation

The Washington Nationals have placed closer Sean Doolittle on the 10-day disabled list with left toe inflammation, retroactive to July 7, according to MASN's Mark Zuckerman.

Doolittle was named to his second All-Star Game on Sunday after being mostly dominant throughout the first half of the season. As the Nationals' bullpen ace, Doolittle posted a 1.45 ERA and 0.54 WHIP while recording 22 saves.

The 31-year-old will give up his All-Star roster spot, but plans to participate in everything but the game, according to MASN's Mark Zuckerman.

The lefty sat out the last three games with soreness in his left toe. Kelvin Herrera could serve as Nationals closer in his absence.

The team also optioned right-hander Jefry Rodriguez to Triple-A while recalling pitchers Austin Voth and Wander Suero.
