Mets sign Austin Jackson
Less than three weeks after being traded to the Texas Rangers and subsequently released, the New York Mets have signed outfielder Austin Jackson, according to a team announcement.
Terms of the deal are not yet known, though it is a major-league deal, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.
Jackson - who signed a one-year, $3-million deal this past offseason - was traded from the San Francisco Giants to the Rangers in a salary dump on July 8, but he never suited up in Texas and was released less than a week after being dealt.
The 31-year-old journeyman was in the midst of a disappointing season prior to the trade, one year after having a resurgent campaign with the Cleveland Indians. After posting a .869 OPS (124 OPS+) over 85 games with Cleveland, Jackson was the author of an underwhelming .242/.309/.295 slash line in San Francisco.
Jackson joins a deep outfield corps with the Mets. As the non-waiver trade deadline nears, outfielder Jose Bautista has factored prominently in rumors, and could become increasingly expendable with the addition of Jackson.
