Beltre open to joining contender via August trade
Adrian Beltre hasn't given up on winning a World Series this season.
The veteran third baseman remained a member of the Texas Rangers past the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, but he's open to joining a contender in August if he has a shot at playing in the postseason.
"I cannot sit here and say 100 percent I'm going to finish the season here, which I'd be happy to do," Beltre said after Tuesday's deadline passed, according to the Associated Press. "But you never know what comes up."
The Atlanta Braves and Boston Red Sox were among the teams that reportedly expressed interest in Beltre, but general manager Jon Daniels said nothing came close. One reason was that Beltre does not want to be a part-time player, and will only accept a move if he's going to play a significant role.
"If he was going to go somewhere, it was going to be somewhere he could win, but also somewhere he could play and contribute," Daniels said. "He didn't want to be a cheerleader. He was very clear about that. He also was very clear that he didn't want to go somewhere that would lead us to not getting a good deal."
The 39-year-old Beltre has logged 21 seasons in the majors, the last eight of them in Texas. He's played in just 28 postseason games and has never won a World Series.
Beltre's been non-committal about playing next season but has indicated that he wants to retire with the Rangers. Despite his age, the four-time All-Star remains a productive player, hitting .287.339/.396 with five home runs and 13 doubles in 75 games.
