Report: 50/50 chance Blue Jays trade Stroman this winter
Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Marcus Stroman generated interest from a number of teams prior to the non-waiver trade deadline, and there's a chance the front office revisits those conversations this offseason.
"I think there is a ... probably a 50/50 chance he's dealt this offseason based on where their conversations were at the deadline this year, and where the need is for pitching around the game," Jon Morosi of MLB Network told Sportsnet 590 The FAN.
Toronto could take advantage of a weak free-agent pitching market that is lacking star power. Dallas Keuchel, Patrick Corbin, Charlie Morton, and J.A. Happ are among the top arms available, while Clayton Kershaw and David Price could also be added to the list if they opt out of their repspective contracts. The New York Mets are also believed to be willing to listen to offers on Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard.
Stroman has endured an up-and-down season slowed by injury, but is the Blue Jays' top starter when healthy. He owns a 5.20 ERA and 1.43 WHIP across 16 starts this season. He's been much better of late, fashioning a 3.35 ERA across his last six outings.
Even with the Blue Jays rebuilding, there's no urgency for the front office to move Stroman this winter. The 27-year-old is arbitration eligible for another two seasons before hitting free agency. But should Stroman finish strong over the next two months, the Jays could look to sell high with two years of control left.
