Mets' deGrom breaks 108-year-old record with latest quality start
In case you hadn't realized, Jacob deGrom is pretty good at pitching.
The New York Mets right-hander went seven innings against the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night, striking out nine and allowing two runs on three hits. With this outing, he broke a major-league record by allowing three or fewer earned runs in 26 consecutive starts, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.
The previous record-holder was Leslie "King" Cole, who managed the feat in 25 straight starts in 1910 with the Chicago Cubs. Cole finished that season with a 20-4 record. deGrom entered the night with a record of 8-8 and left Tuesday's game trailing the Marlins by a score of 2-1.
The last time deGrom allowed more than three earned runs in a start was April 10 against these same Marlins when four runs crossed the plate.
Despite the latest dominant start, deGrom's ERA actually rose to 1.71 (from 1.68) through 29 starts.
