Yankees set MLB record with most 10+ HR players in single season
The newest iteration of the Bronx Bombers is now in the history books.
During Thursday's game against the Boston Red Sox, the New York Yankees became the first team in Major League Baseball history to feature 12 players with at least 10 home runs. The feat was clinched by midseason acquisition Luke Voit, who hit a two-run bomb during the second inning.
Player | HR |
---|---|
Giancarlo Stanton | 35 |
Aaron Judge | 26 |
Didi Gregorius | 26 |
Miguel Andujar | 25 |
Aaron Hicks | 24 |
Gleyber Torres | 23 |
Gary Sanchez | 16 |
Brett Gardner | 12 |
Greg Bird | 11 |
Austin Romine | 10 |
Neil Walker | 10 |
Luke Voit | 10 |
Remarkably, Voit made this possible despite appearing in only 30 games with New York after being acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals on July 29.
The 2004 Detroit Tigers, who had 11 players with at least 10 home runs, previously held the record, which was eventually matched by the 2015 Houston Astros, 2016 Minnesota Twins, and 2017 Astros.
The most home runs overall by a team in a season is still held by the Seattle Mariners, who combined to hit 264 in 1997. The Yankees entered Thursday night's game within striking distance with 245 homers, the eighth most in MLB history.
Their only shot at making it 13 players appears to be either Andrew McCutchen, who has four with his new club, or Kyle Higashioka, who has three.
