Rockies-Cubs becomes longest winner-take-all game in MLB history

The Colorado Rockies and Chicago Cubs met for a hotly contested NL wild-card game on Tuesday, and the marathon contest wound up breaking records.

The 13-inning tilt - which went into the early hours of Wednesday morning in Chicago before the Rockies came away with a 2-1 win - was the longest winner-take-all game in Major League Baseball history in terms of innings.

Tuesday's matchup surpassed two previous games that both went 12 frames: the 2014 American League wild-card game between the Oakland Athletics and the Kansas City Royals, and Game 7 of the 1924 World Series between the Washington Senators and the New York Giants. Coincidentally, Jon Lester, Terrance Gore, and Wade Davis all played in Tuesday's game and in the 2014 AL wild-card game.

In terms of time, Tuesday's game was by far the longest in postseason history to be played at Wrigley Field, according to ESPN Stats & Info. The game was clocked at 4 hours, 55 minutes.

By using 23 players, including nine pitchers, the Cubs also tied a playoff record, per ESPN Stats & Info.
