MLB suspends Russell 40 games after completion of investigation
Major League Baseball has suspended Chicago Cubs shortstop Addison Russell 40 games without pay for violating the league's joint domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policy.
The suspension is retroactive to Sept. 21, and Russell did not appeal.
Commissioner Rob Manfred issued the following statement about the conclusion of the investigation:
"My office has completed its investigation into the allegations that Addison Russell violated Major League Baseball's Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy. Having reviewed all of the available evidence, I have concluded that Mr. Russell violated the Policy and should be subject to discipline in the form of an unpaid suspension that will cover 40 games."
Russell was placed on administrative leave shortly after Melisa Reidy, his ex-wife, wrote a blog post accusing him of physical and emotional mistreatment during their marriage. He has denied the accusations.
