Yankees' Sabathia announces he's retiring after 2019 season

CC Sabathia's 19th major-league season will be his last.

Shortly after officially re-signing with the New York Yankees on a one-year, $8-million contract Wednesday, the veteran left-hander took to Twitter and announced that he'll retire after the upcoming season.

"This'll be it," Sabathia said in the video, alongside his "R2C2" podcast partner Ryan Ruocco. "Nineteen years. ... I'm excited (to retire with the Yankees)."

Sabathia's final season promises to be memorable, as he sits just 14 strikeouts shy of becoming the 17th pitcher in history to record 3,000 career Ks. He's also in excellent position to reach 3,500 career innings pitched and 250 career wins before retiring.

For his career, the 38-year-old sports a 246-153 record with a 3.70 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 2,986 strikeouts, and 1,060 walks across 3,470 innings pitched. He also recorded 38 complete games and 12 shutouts and is the majors' active leader in strikeouts, walks, complete games, and innings.

Sabathia pitched the first seven-plus seasons of his career with the Cleveland Indians, where he won the 2007 AL Cy Young award, and spent the second half of 2008 with the Milwaukee Brewers before joining the Yankees as a free agent before the following season. This will mark his 11th season in New York.

In 2018, Sabathia crafted a 3.65 ERA with 140 strikeouts over 29 starts for the Yankees.
