Report: T-Mobile purchases naming rights for Mariners' stadium
The Seattle Mariners could be taking the field at T-Mobile Field when the 2019 season kicks off.
The telecommunications company has reportedly purchased the Mariners' ballpark naming rights after the team's deal with Safeco Insurance expired, according to Forbes' Maury Brown. The terms of the deal aren't known, but it's rumoured to be worth $6 million annually.
The retractable roof ballpark in Seattle had been named Safeco Field through its first 20 seasons since its opening in July 1999. Workers began removing the Safeco Field signage from the building earlier in November, according to The Seattle Times' Alan Berner.
The Mariners extended their league-worst 17-year playoff drought last season. Seattle last made the postseason in 2001 when the team won 116 games.
T-Mobile currently owns the naming rights for the home arena of the Vegas Golden Knights, an NHL expansion franchise that made it to the Stanley Cup Final in its inaugural season earlier this year.
