Pedroia won't need surgery, Red Sox focused on bullpen
Dustin Pedroia's recovery progress has Boston Red Sox management optimistic the team will not be forced to add positional players in free agency or trades this offseason.
Pedroia will not have surgery to repair his injured knee and is targeting mid-January to start running again. His progress has given president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski confidence in the team's non-pitching roster, according to Alex Speier of the Boston Globe.
"With that prognosis ... we're really, as far as positional players, pretty well set," Dombrowski said.
Dombrowski reportedly won't rule out making moves but the primary focus is the bullpen; Craig Kimbrel, Nathan Eovaldi, and Joe Kelly are all free agents.
"We have had conversations with (representatives for Kimbrel and Eovaldi)," said Dombrowski. "We'll continue to do so."
He added the Red Sox are comfortable with the starting rotation but are open to making additions, according to Speier.
The Red Sox already re-signed infielder Steve Pearce to a one-year, $6.25-million contract and appear content with maintaining the status quo on offense.
