Report: Yankees also asked Mariners about Segura
The New York Yankees landed pitcher James Paxton from the Seattle Mariners in a blockbuster deal on Monday, and trade talks between the teams also reportedly touched on a potential replacement for injured Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius.
Before the Paxton deal was agreed upon, the Yankees asked the Mariners about shortstop Jean Segura, a source told MLB.com's Jon Morosi. The teams eventually decided to focus on Paxton.
With Gregorius set to miss the first half of 2019 after undergoing Tommy John surgery on his right elbow in October, the Yankees are apparently on the lookout for a shortstop even though youngster Gleyber Torres could shift there from second base if needed.
Segura, a two-time All-Star, can fill that need defensively while also providing strong offense.
The 28-year-old Dominican's hit .300 or above in three straight seasons and was a National League MVP candidate in 2016 before moving to Seattle in a trade from the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Along with potentially acquiring a shortstop, the Yankees plan to add one more prominent starter during the offseason, a source told Morosi, with Patrick Corbin and J.A. Happ mentioned as possibilities.
