Report: Mariners looking to move Cano, Seager
The Seattle Mariners have been baseball's busiest team in the offseason trade market and they may not be done.
The club is looking to trade infielders Kyle Seager and Robinson Cano in an effort to get their contracts off the books but neither is garnering much interest, a source tells Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports.
General manager Jerry Dipoto said in early November the team was considering a "re-imagining" of the roster. The Mariners have already dealt catcher Mike Zunino to the Tampa Bay Rays and ace left-hander James Paxton to the New York Yankees, who reportedly also inquired about shortstop Jean Segura.
Seager, 31, has $57.5 million remaining on his contract over the next three seasons plus a $15-million team option for 2022. The lefty-hitting third baseman had established himself as a reliable bat with consistent pop but he's struggled to reach base over the last two seasons. Since the start of 2017, Seager has hit .235/.298/.425 with 49 home runs in 309 games.
Cano is even pricier. The 36-year-old second baseman is owed $120 million over the next five seasons at $24 million per year. He's coming off a season in which he hit .303/.374/.471 but received an 80-game suspension when he tested positive for a diuretic in May.
