Report: Yankees not willing to spend $300M on Machado

The New York Yankees may be interested in signing All-Star infielder Manny Machado, but they reportedly aren't willing to break the bank with a $300-million contract, a source tells Jon Heyman of Fancred Sports.

If that's the case, the chances of Machado donning pinstripes in 2019 may be shot. The 26-year-old is expected to sign a monster contract this offseason with MLB Trade Rumors projecting a 13-year, $390-million deal.

The Yankees will be without shortstop Didi Gregorius for the first part of the season as he recovers from Tommy John surgery, making Machado a logical target. Even when he returns, Gregorius' time with the Yankees could be short-lived as he is set to hit free agency following next season.

Machado is a more potent offensive player and younger than Gregorius. The four-time All-Star has a career slash line of .282/.335/.487 with 175 home runs, 211 doubles, and 513 RBIs over seven seasons since debuting as a 19-year-old in 2012.

Should the Yankees be unwilling to meet Machado's anticipated price tag and fall out of the sweepstakes for his services, there will be no shortage of suitors waiting to pick up the slack. The Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago White Sox have been seen as their top competition for much of the offseason, while three mystery teams have reportedly joined the race.
