Two teams have put themselves in a good position to acquire one of the top remaining free-agent relievers available on the open market.

The New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies are among the leaders to sign Zach Britton, according to Jon Heyman of Fancred Sports.

Britton expressed a desire to return to New York last September, calling them one of his "top choices." But Philadelphia has been "very aggressive" in their pursuit of the 30-year-old, sources told Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

With fellow lefty Andrew Miller reportedly agreeing to a deal with the St. Louis Cardinals, Britton is the best southpaw available in free agency among relievers.

While both of the Yankees and Phillies had their attention focused on Manny Machado this past week, an acquisition of Britton's caliber would provide either of the club's bullpens with stability.

After coming back from an Achilles injury in June, Britton recorded a 3.10 ERA in 41 appearances with the Yankees and Baltimore Orioles.

Over the course of his eight-year career, Britton has 142 saves. He also finished fourth in American League Cy Young voting during a remarkable 2016 season in which he posted a 0.54 ERA.
