Report: Padres GM met with Machado in Miami
The San Diego Padres finally got their meeting with Manny Machado.
Padres general manager A.J. Preller reportedly had a sit-down with the superstar free agent and his wife in Machado's hometown of Miami at some point this week, according to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune.
While the meeting represents some form of progress in the Padres' pursuit of Machado, it's not known how far it might have moved the needle. Machado isn't believed to be close to choosing his next team, Acee reports.
San Diego has emerged as a late entrant in the Machado sweepstakes with an eye towards using the 26-year-old at third base. The team has reportedly been "aggressive" with its contract offer to Machado, though questions remain about whether he wants to play there.
The potential dollar value of the Padres' offer to Machado still isn't known, according to Acee, but he's thought to still be seeking an average annual salary in the $30-million range.
The Chicago White Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, and New York Yankees are also believed to be chasing Machado.
