Report: Giants still have 'a shot' at landing Harper

Don't count the San Francisco Giants out of the Bryce Harper sweepstakes just yet.

Although momentum appears to be building toward Harper receiving a megadeal from the Philadelphia Phillies, San Francisco reportedly still has "a shot" at landing him, according to SNY's Andy Martino.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today confirmed the Giants are still pursuing Harper. Nightengale said during an interview with 105.7 The Fan on Wednesday that San Francisco is "the only other team" in on Harper aside from the Phillies.

Barring the unforeseen, that means Harper won't team up with fellow superstar Manny Machado in San Diego. The Padres reportedly inked Machado to a record 10-year, $300-million deal on Tuesday, and it was quickly reported that they aren't ruling out giving a massive contract to Harper, too.

However, a high-ranking Padres source told Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune on Tuesday, "We're not signing him."

Despite still being involved, Giants executives are said to not be "overly optimistic" about their chances of luring Harper to the Bay Area, people who've spoken to the team told Jon Heyman of MLB Network.

With Machado finally off the board, it's widely anticipated Harper will sign another record contract soon. The 26-year-old is thought to be seeking a deal even larger than what the Padres gave Machado.

The Chicago White Sox, who have been chasing Harper throughout the offseason and missed out on landing Machado, are also out of the running for the 2015 NL MVP, Nightengale reported Wednesday.

Harper's also been linked with a return to the Washington Nationals, his team for the past seven seasons, this winter.
