Report: Mets add Carlos Gomez on minor-league deal
The New York Mets have reportedly agreed to a minor-league deal with free-agent outfielder Carlos Gomez, a source told Andy Martino of SNY.
The deal isn't finalized and is pending a physical.
Gomez, 33, appeared in 118 games for the Tampa Bay Rays last season and hit .208/.298/.336 with nine home runs and 32 RBIs.
He'll compete for a big-league job in spring training with a slew of outfielders including Keon Broxton, Juan Lagares, Rajai Davis, and Gregor Blanco. The Mets are expected to start the regular season with Michael Conforto, Brandon Nimmo, and Jeff McNeil in their outfield.
This isn't the first time the Mets tried to acquire Gomez. At the 2015 non-waiver trade deadline, New York had a deal in place with the Brewers for Gomez that would have sent Zack Wheeler and Wilmer Flores to Milwaukee.
The reported deal broke while Flores was still playing in a game for the Mets and he became visibly emotional on the field.
The trade never wound up happening after concerns arose about Gomez's hip.
