The last-place San Francisco Giants suffered a big blow to their lineup on Thursday, as the team announced catcher Buster Posey has been placed on the seven-day concussion injured list.

Posey said he took a foul tip off the mask in Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Reds and was diagnosed with a concussion Wednesday, according to Kerry Crowley of the Mercury News.

"I felt like I should have felt more normal than this after three days," Posey explained, according to Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area.

Posey, a former National League Rookie of the Year and MVP, played Tuesday against the Colorado Rockies but was not listed in San Francisco's starting lineup for Wednesday's contest between the two clubs. That game was eventually postponed due to inclement weather.

The veteran catcher is optimistic he'll return to action next week but it's too soon to tell, according to Crowley.

"When you're dealing with the brain, you've got to be cautious," Posey told Pavlovic. "I definitely value who I am and will be as a husband and father, first and foremost. At the same time, I enjoy doing my job and plan on doing my job."

The 32-year-old backstop is off to a slow start for the Giants, hitting .245/.308/.406 with 11 doubles and 13 RBIs in 2019.

San Francisco will likely turn to veteran back-up Stephen Vogt as its starter while Posey is out of action.

In other corresponding moves announced Thursday, the team placed left-hander Drew Pomeranz on the 10-day injured list with a left lat strain and recalled catcher Aramis Garcia and pitcher Tyler Beede from Triple-A Sacramento.
