Astros' Correa fractures rib during massage, out 4-6 weeks
The Houston Astros' lineup took another big hit on Wednesday, this time in truly bizarre fashion.
The team announced that shortstop Carlos Correa will be placed on the injured list and miss four-to-six weeks with a fractured rib.
Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow said Correa's injury happened on Tuesday morning at the veteran's home, then deferred to the All-Star to divulge any further information, according to MLB.com's Brian McTaggart.
Later Wednesday, Correa released a statement explaining that he suffered the fracture while getting a massage.
"I'm extremely disappointed about not being on the field with my teammates," Correa said, according to McTaggart. "I sustained the rib fracture during a massage at my home on Tuesday. To sustain an injury in such an unusual way makes it even more frustrating. However, I will work hard to get back on the field as quickly as possible to help our team achieve our goal of winning another championship."
Luhnow added that he's comfortable with the team's depth, but will still look externally to see if any options make sense while Correa is sidelined.
Correa was in the midst of an All-Star-caliber first half, hitting .295/.360/.547 with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs.
"It’s more frustrating for him," Luhnow said. "Our team is built to withstand a few injuries and should be fine … We also have to remember he didn’t start playing until June in his rookie year and won the (American League Rookie of the Year) Award.
"He can do a lot of damage in a short amount of time. The focus is to get him back healthy, help us in the second half and really obviously help in the postseason because that’s where we need him the most."
The Astros are already without Jose Altuve, George Springer, Aledmys Diaz, Collin McHugh, and Max Stassi because of injuries.
In a corresponding move, the team recalled infielder/outfielder Myles Straw from Triple-A Round Rock.
Straw, 24, was hitting .289/.369/.353 at Round Rock with 16 stolen bases before his call-up.
