The Chicago Cubs designated veteran outfielder Carlos Gonzalez for assignment Saturday, the club announced.

Chicago prefers the three-time All-Star to report to the minors should he clear waivers, but the decision would be his, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network. If Gonzalez declines, he will become a free agent.

After a decade with the Colorado Rockies, Gonzalez opened the 2019 season on a minor-league deal with the Cleveland Indians but was released after batting .210 with a pair of home runs in 30 games.

He signed on with the Cubs in early June, but his tenure with the club may be done after 15 games. He hit .175/.306/.500 with one homer and two doubles with Chicago.

The Cubs also placed left-hander Cole Hamels on the 10-day injured list with a left oblique strain and recalled pitchers Dillon Maples and Rowan Wick from Triple-A Iowa.
