Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs dies at 27
Los Angeles Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs died Monday in Texas, according to a statement released by the team. He was 27.
"It is with great sorrow that we report Tyler Skaggs passed away earlier today in Texas," the team said.
"Tyler has, and always will be, an important part of the Angels family. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Carli and his entire family during this devastating time."
The Southlake Police Department released a statement Monday regarding Skaggs' death.
"This afternoon at 2:18 p.m., the Southlake Police Department responded to a call of an unconscious male in a room in the Hilton hotel at 1400 Plaza Place. Officers arrived and found the male unresponsive and he was pronounced deceased at the scene," the statement read.
"The deceased has been identified as Tyler Skaggs, 27, of the Los Angeles Angels baseball team.
"At this time, no foul play is suspected. This investigation is ongoing and we will release pertinent information as it is available.
"We would like to extend our condolences to the Skaggs family and to the Los Angeles Angels organization."
A Southland Police spokesperson said suicide is not suspected in Skaggs' death, according to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times.
Skaggs, a first-round draft pick of the Angels in 2009, spent the past five years with Los Angeles. He started against the Oakland Athletics on Saturday.
Monday's game between the Angels and Rangers has been postponed following the news of Skaggs' death.
