Dwight Gooden arrested for 2nd DUI in 6 weeks

Dwight Gooden was arrested for driving under the influence Monday for the second time in just over six weeks, sources told Craig McCarthy and Kate Sheehy of the New York Post.

Gooden was caught driving the wrong way down a one-way street in Newark, N.J., the city's public safety director, Anthony F. Ambrose, confirmed Tuesday.

"It's sad to see the continued problems of this former Mets star but it's an example of the persistent scourge of drugs and alcohol in this country and the stranglehold they have on addicts," Ambrose said.

The 54-year-old former pitcher was arrested June 7 on suspicion of cocaine possession and driving under the influence in Holmdel, N.J. A court date had been set for Tuesday.

Gooden has previously attended rehabilitation facilities for drug and alcohol abuse.

Gooden spent 11 of his 16 MLB seasons with the New York Mets. He played an integral role on their 1986 World Series team, authoring a 2.84 ERA over 33 starts and finishing seventh in NL Cy Young voting. The right-hander won the NL Rookie of the Year back in 1984 and the pitching Triple Crown in 1985. Gooden retired as a one-time Cy Young winner and Silver Slugger recipient.
