Report: Red Sox, Mets discussed Diaz trade
The Boston Red Sox and New York Mets discussed a potential trade for closer Edwin Diaz, a source told Mark Feinsand of MLB.com.
Feinsand notes no deal is imminent, but ESPN's Buster Olney reports that some rival evaluators believe the Mets will move Diaz by Wednesday's trade deadline and see Boston as the most invested pursuer.
However, citing a source, Feinsand reported Tuesday morning that the Red Sox are unlikely to land any of the top relief options on the market, including Diaz, Detroit Tigers closer Shane Greene, or Cincinnati Reds righty Raisel Iglesias.
The Red Sox have gone most of the season without a fixed closer after letting Craig Kimbrel leave in free agency. Six different relievers have recorded saves for Boston and right-hander Ryan Brasier leads the way with seven.
Boston's bullpen has been collectively shaky. Its 4.54 ERA ranks 18th in the majors and it's one of baseball's more walk-prone groups with a 4.19 BB/9.
Diaz, 25, has been erratic in his first season in Queens, but he's only a year removed from being baseball's best reliever. The right-hander converted 57 saves with a 1.96 ERA and 15.22 K/9 for the Seattle Mariners in 2018.
Though the pieces involved a potential offer are unknown, Olney speculates the Red Sox could include third-base prospect Bobby Dalbec or 2018 first-rounder Triston Casas.
