Report: Athletics to call up top catching prospect Sean Murphy
The Oakland Athletics will reportedly bring top catching prospect Sean Murphy up to the big-league level when rosters expand Sunday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Murphy, 24, ranks as the Athletics' No. 3 prospect as well as MLB's No. 4 catching prospect and No. 44 overall farmhand, according to MLB Pipeline.
He's authored a .308/.386/.625 slash line with 10 homers in 31 games at Triple-A Las Vegas this year.
Collectively, Oakland catchers rank 11th in the American League in WAR, according to FanGraphs. The A's have relied on five different backstops at different times this year, including Josh Phegley, Nick Hundley, Chris Herrmann, Beau Taylor, and Dustin Garneau.
Murphy is the latest minor-leaguer to make the jump to the big club, after No. 2 prospect and left-handed pitcher A.J. Puk was promoted last week.
