Report: Angels could pursue Maddon if Cubs don't retain him
A reunion between Joe Maddon and the Los Angeles Angels could be in the works.
The Angels could choose to part ways with manager Brad Ausmus this offseason and bring Maddon back into the fold if the Chicago Cubs don't retain his services, major-league sources told Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.
Maddon, 65, is in the final season of his contract with the Cubs, with rumors suggesting the club and manager will move on from one another this winter.
Meanwhile, Ausmus is in the first year of his three-year pact with the Angels, leading the team to a 71-86 record and likely fourth-place finish in the American League West.
Maddon began his managerial career with the Angels after working through multiple different coaching gigs within the organization. In 1996, Maddon served as the interim manager following John McNamara's departure, and then again bridged the gap between Terry Collins and Mike Scioscia in 1999.
The veteran bench boss earned his first full-time gig with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 2006. Following the 2014 season, the Chicago Cubs poached Maddon to lead their staff, unceremoniously cutting ties with Rick Renteria to do so. Over his 16-year tenure - including the two interim gigs - Maddon owns a 1250-1065 win-loss record and has won one World Series.
Rosenthal adds that disappointing seasons by the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies could compel their respective front offices to make a managerial change and potentially pursue Maddon as well. Both Mickey Callaway and Gabe Kapler have one year remaining on their contracts.
