Noelia Marte, wife of Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Starling Marte, has died from a heart attack.
Starling made the news public in an Instagram post.
"Today I go through the great pain of making public the unfortunate death of my wife Noelia, due to a heart attack," Starling wrote in English. "It is a moment of indescribable pain. On behalf of my family, I am grateful for the expressions of esteem and solidarity in this difficult time."
Noelia was reportedly hospitalized and awaiting surgery to repair a broken ankle at the time of her death, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network.
Starling Marte, 31, spent the first eight seasons of his major-league career with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was traded to the Diamondbacks in January. Both teams offered their condolences on social media.
