Report: Mariners sign prospect Evan White to 6-year, $24M deal

The Seattle Mariners have agreed to a six-year, $24-million contract with prospect Evan White, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN.

White has yet to make an appearance at the major-league level after being selected 17th overall in the 2017 MLB Draft. The 23-year-old is the fourth-ranked prospect in the Mariners' system and the second-best first-base prospect in all of baseball, according to MLB Pipeline.

White spent the entire 2019 campaign at Double-A, where he posted a .293/.350/.488 slash line with 18 home runs and a pair of stolen bases over 92 games played. The first baseman was named to the 2019 All-Star Futures Game.

This marks one of the largest contracts ever handed to a player who has not accrued any service time. Last offseason, the Chicago White Sox signed Eloy Jimenez to a six-year, $43-million contract before he reached the majors. The year prior, the Philadelphia Phillies inked Scott Kingery to a six-year, $24-million deal - the same as White.

Both Kingery and Jimenez had already played a substantial number of games above Double-A, however, whereas White was only stationed at Triple-A for four games in 2018.
