Twins sign Clippard to 1-year deal worth reported $2.75M
The Minnesota Twins added to their bullpen by signing veteran reliever Tyler Clippard to a one-year contract, the team announced Friday.
The deal will pay Clippard $2.75 million, a source told Jeff Passan of ESPN.
Clippard joins the Twins following a solid 2019 campaign with the division-rival Cleveland Indians. The 13-year veteran posted a 2.90 ERA and a 3.89 FIP with 64 strikeouts across 62 innings while allowing just eight home runs. Meanwhile, Clippard's 0.86 WHIP was the fifth-lowest mark in baseball among relievers with at least 50 innings pitched.
The righty also displayed excellent reverse splits in 2019, holding left-handed batters to a meager .123/.210/.255 line across 120 plate appearances.
Minnesota marks Clippard's 10th stop in the majors since his debut in 2007. The 34-year-old two-time All-Star owns a career 53-46 record with a 3.14 ERA, a 1.11 WHIP, 905 strikeouts, and 68 saves across 751 big-league appearances (including 12 starts). He's thrown at least 60 innings in each of the last 11 campaigns.
The Twins have also added to their bullpen this winter by bringing back veteran reliever Sergio Romo on a one-year, $5-million deal that was officially announced on Friday.
