Bregman denies wearing buzzer: 'That's stupid'

Another Houston Astros star insists he didn't wear an electronic buzzer to steal signs during games.

All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman joined his teammate Jose Altuve in denying that he wore the illegal device during the 2019 season.

"No way," Bregman told reporters Saturday at the Astros' fan fest, according to ESPN's Stefano Fusaro. "That's stupid."

Shortly after commissioner Rob Manfred's report on the Astros' sign-stealing scheme was released, Bregman and Altuve were both accused on social media of having worn buzzers or other electronic devices underneath their uniforms. As the various allegations detailed, the devices - worn on the right shoulder - buzzed to indicate what pitches were coming.

As conspiracy theories claiming to have spotted the buzzers flooded the internet Thursday, Altuve issued his denial in a statement released by his agent, Scott Boras. MLB also stated that it found no evidence of Astros players wearing illegal devices during the investigation.

On Saturday, Bregman refused to answer many additional questions about the scandal, including whether Houston's 2017 World Series championship might be tainted as a result, according to MLB.com's Brian Taggart. When pressed by reporters on the scandal, he repeatedly responded: "The commissioner came out with a report, MLB did their report, and the Astros did what they did. They made their decision on what they're going to do."

Still, it appears that the 25-year-old star is focused on restoring his personal reputation and his team's reputation in the season to come.

"(In) the 2020 year, our actions will speak louder than our words," Bregman said, according to Brian T. Smith of the Houston Chronicle.
