Report: Red Sox weighing Mookie offers from Dodgers, Padres
Trade rumors surrounding Boston Red Sox outfielder Mookie Betts aren't going to go away until a deal finally gets done.
The team continues to discuss a potential trade with multiple teams and is considering prospect bundles offered by both the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres, according to Alex Speier of the Boston Globe.
The Padres were reportedly offering outfielder Wil Myers and multiple prospects in exchange for Betts earlier this week. While the Dodgers' offer is unknown, it's expected to include a combination of major-league talent and prospects.
Both clubs have strong minor-league systems with each boasting five representatives in MLB Pipeline's latest Top 100 prospects list. Gavin Lux, Dustin May, Jeter Downs, Josiah Gray, and Keibert Ruiz are atop Los Angeles' list while MacKenzie Gore, CJ Abrams, Luis Patino, Luis Campusano, and Taylor Trammell could be of interest in San Diego's corps.
If Red Sox brass doesn't get a deal to its liking, the club can reopen trade discussions prior to the summer's trade deadline.
Betts, a four-time All-Star and 2018 AL MVP, is slated to hit free agency following the 2020 season and has indicated to the Red Sox he intends to test the open market in lieu of signing an extension. He will earn $27 million in the final year of team control.
Additionally, the Red Sox have expressed an interest in attaching left-hander David Price to Betts in a hypothetical trade in order to shed extra salary. Price has three years and $66 million remaining on his contract. Despite this, the veteran southpaw is not believed to be part of these discussions with the Padres or Dodgers, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
The Arizona Diamondbacks have also shown interest in Betts, sources told Rosenthal, but there's no indication an offer has been submitted.
While a trade isn't necessarily inevitable, it's increasingly looking like Betts will don a new uniform sooner rather than later.
