The Boston Red Sox are deep into trade talks with the Los Angeles Dodgers regarding Mookie Betts and see the benefit of swinging a deal before spring training, sources told ESPN's Buster Olney.

The two sides are discussing multiple trade combinations, with one including left-hander David Price, Olney adds.

Discussions between Boston and L.A. have reportedly approached a resolution, but it doesn't appear that a deadline to complete a deal for Betts has been set.

Rival executives believe it's inevitable that the 2018 American League MVP will be traded before the July 31 deadline, according to Olney.

Betts has been linked to the Dodgers for a good chunk of the offseason, but he's also drawn interest from the San Diego Padres, who've apparently discussed names with the Red Sox.

While Dodgers prospect Gavin Lux appears to be off-limits, other L.A. players mentioned as possible trade candidates include veterans Enrique Hernandez and Chris Taylor, youngsters Alex Verdugo and Tony Gonsolin, and farmhands Keibert Ruiz and Josiah Gray.

The inclusion of Price in a deal could make things tricky for both sides.

Boston is looking to unload the former Cy Young winner, who's due $96 million over the next three seasons. If the Dodgers were to take on his deal, the Red Sox may have to eat some of his contract or accept a much smaller return from L.A., Olney explains.

The 27-year-old Betts is still one of baseball's premier players. He hit .295/.391/.524 with 29 home runs, 40 doubles, 80 RBIs, and 16 steals last season, but is owed $27 million in 2020 and is expected to test free agency after the campaign.

Boston has been unable to reach a contract extension with Betts despite making efforts.
