Veteran pitcher Adam Wainwright and his wife, Jenny, are doing their part to help minor-league players in the St. Louis Cardinals organization during the COVID-19 crisis.
The couple donated $250,000 to aid those minor leaguers, the More Than Baseball organization announced Thursday.
"The generosity shown by the Wainwrights during this time of uncertainty is exemplary. We are grateful for their contribution to those in need," Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak said.
Wainwright's donation followed an announcement from Major League Baseball that detailed the league's short-term plan to compensate minor leaguers until the originally scheduled start of the MiLB season.
"Each player who is under a Minor League Uniform Player Contract will receive a lump sum equal to the allowances that would have been paid through April 8," the release from MLB read.
"The exceptions to this plan are non-40-man-roster players who are already receiving minor-league allowances; players who are currently receiving housing, food, or other services from clubs; and players who were not participating in, or expected to participate in, minor-league spring training."
MLB has remained in communication with clubs about how to compensate minor-league players from April 9 until the season eventually begins.
Wainwright, who is also the founder of Big League Impact - a nonprofit organization that aims to "save lives, restore dignity, and instill hope in local communities around the globe" - has played his entire 14-year big-league career with the Cardinals.
