Report: Yankees, Mets tentatively agreed to Wheeler trade in 2019

Zack Wheeler very nearly changed uniforms at the 2019 trade deadline, but an agreement fell through.

The New York Mets tentatively agreed to send the right-hander to the New York Yankees, but another player's medicals ultimately squashed the deal, Andy Martino of SNY reports.

The identities of that player and any other pieces potentially involved are not known.

The Yankees were reported as one of the most aggressive suitors for the starter last summer, but the Mets ultimately held onto him for the remainder of the season.

The 29-year-old finished 2019 with an 11-8 record, 3.96 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, and 195 strikeouts in 195 1/3 innings. Over parts of five seasons in Queens, Wheeler was 44-38 with a 3.77 ERA.

Wheeler signed a five-year, $118-million contract with the division-rival Philadelphia Phillies this winter. The Mets received a compensatory draft pick in return because Wheeler rejected the club's $17.8-million qualifying offer prior to free agency.
