Report: A-Rod, JLo raising money for Mets bid
Baseball's hottest power couple might soon purchase the New York Mets.
Retired MLB superstar Alex Rodriguez and recording artist/actress Jennifer Lopez have retained JPMorgan Chase to raise capital for a possible bid for the Mets, sources told Scott Soshnick of Variety.
Variety estimates the couples' net worth to be $700 million. Meanwhile, the Mets were recently valued at $2.8 billion, according to Forbes.
Fred Wilpon has owned at least a minority stake in the Mets since 1980, and the Wilpon family became the sole owners of the franchise in 2002. Fred's son Jeff currently acts as the team's chief operating officer.
During the offseason, reports of the Wilpon's interest in selling the team began surfacing, with billionaire hedge fund manager Steve Cohen quickly tied to the club as a potential suitor. However, Cohen released a statement in early February saying the transaction was "too difficult to execute" and he's moving on.
In early March during an appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, A-Rod said "if the opportunity came up, I would certainly look at (purchasing the Mets)." He also said the Mets were his favorite team growing up.
Rodriguez, 44, played 22 seasons in MLB, spending 12 with the New York Yankees. The 14-time All-Star and three-time MVP has been dating JLo since early 2017. The couple announced their engagement in March 2019.
