Ahead by three runs against the defending World Series champion Chicago Cubs during the second inning of Game 5 in the 2017 National League Division Series, the Nationals' first trip to an NLCS since moving to Washington appeared in sight.

Washington squandered the lead in front of its home crowd, with the Cubs battling back to crush the Nationals' hopes for advancement through a series of odd events, including the unraveling of the normally automatic Max Scherzer, who pitched in relief.
