Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Bryce Harper has a plan for how Major League Baseball could stage its 2020 season.
The 2015 National League MVP took to Instagram on Saturday to show off his skills as a future commissioner, breaking down a potential schedule if the season begins on July 1.
First, Harper would take a page out of the NBA's book and split the league into Eastern and Western conferences. The league has discussed a potential realignment of its divisions to allow teams to avoid too much travel.
Here's how the rest of Harper's idea breaks down:
Regular season
- 135-game schedule
- Season ends in mid-November
- Off day every second Monday
- Sundays feature seven-inning doubleheaders
- Teams have 30-man rosters with six-man rotations
- Universal DH a possibility
Postseason
- Two-week World Series tournament
- 10 teams
- Round-robin format
- Winner of three-game set moves on
- Loser plays in single-game elimination
- Hosted at Globe Life Field in Texas, other stadium, or in Las Vegas
Under Harper's idea, the league would then push back Opening Day in each of the next two seasons. The 2021 campaign would start on May 1 with 2022 commencing on April 1.
