Report: Cardinals replace Yankees in 'Field of Dreams' game vs. White Sox
Major League Baseball is still planning to stage the "Field of Dreams" game on Aug. 13 in Iowa, but it will no longer feature the New York Yankees.
Instead, the St. Louis Cardinals will replace the Bronx Bombers and play the Chicago White Sox, a source told Bruce Levine of 670 The Score.
On Tuesday, MLB issued a statement saying the plan is to proceed with the game as scheduled, according to Jon Morosi of MLB Network.
"To date there has been no change in the status of the event, and we hope to have the option to play," the statement read. "Construction is continuing and we are following all CDC and state protocols regarding recommended safety practices, including social distancing, washing hands, and temperature checks before arriving to the site. Safeguarding public health is our top priority."
To limit travel amid the coronavirus pandemic, teams have been broken up this season into three regions (East, Central, and West). The Yankees and White Sox were no longer slated to play each other during the shortened campaign. Instead, the Cardinals - another Central team - have reportedly been chosen.
The game is to be held at the diamond in Dyersville, Iowa, where the movie "Field of Dreams" was filmed in 1988. The league was constructing a temporary stadium with an 8,000-person capacity, but it's unclear if fans will be allowed to attend if the game takes place.
