White Sox place rookie phenom Madrigal on IL with separated shoulder
The Chicago White Sox are placing rookie second baseman Nick Madrigal on the injured list after he separated his left shoulder in Tuesday's game against the Milwaukee Brewers, general manager Rick Hahn announced Wednesday, according to Scott Merkin of MLB.com.
The team is optimistic Madrigal will be able to return by the end of August, but he may need to undergo surgery in the offseason, Hahn said, according to Chuck Garfien of NBC Sports Chicago.
Madrigal suffered the injury while sliding into third base early in Tuesday's contest. He left the field clutching his arm and was replaced at second base the following inning.

Madrigal is one of the best prospects in the White Sox organization and a top-five prospect at his position, according to MLB.com. The 23-year-old made his highly anticipated MLB debut on July 31 and has gone 5-for-18 with an RBI, two runs scored, a walk, and two strikeouts over his first five big-league contests.
His injury leaves the White Sox without their starting middle-infield tandem as shortstop Tim Anderson is also on the IL.
Because active rosters are being reduced to 28 players Thursday, the White Sox will not make a corresponding move to replace Madrigal on the roster, according to James Fegan of The Athletic.
Infielders Danny Mendick, Ryan Goins, and Leury Garcia are all on the active roster and are candidates to replace Madrigal while he's out.
The White Sox did get one piece of good injury news Wednesday. Designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion, who also left Tuesday's contest with a shoulder injury, is dealing with an inflamed sternoclavicular joint and is considered day-to-day, according to Merkin.
