Blue Jays lose Pearson to IL with elbow tightness
The Toronto Blue Jays are placing rookie right-hander Nate Pearson on the 10-day injured list due to elbow tightness, the team announced Wednesday.
Manager Charlie Montoyo said Pearson is feeling better Wednesday morning than he did after Tuesday's start, but the Blue Jays are exercising caution with their top young arm, according to Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.
There is no timetable for his return.
The flame-throwing 23-year-old made his MLB debut July 29. He's shown flashes but has also been unable to harness his command through four starts. He owns a 6.61 ERA and 1.53 WHIP with 14 strikeouts and 12 walks in 16 1/3 innings.
He's the second high-profile Toronto player to hit the shelf in recent days after shortstop Bo Bichette was placed on the IL on Sunday with a Grade 1 sprain of his right knee.
The team recalled Reliever Jacob Waguespack from the taxi squad to take Pearson's place on the active roster. Chase Anderson and Trent Thornton will split starting duties during Thursday's doubleheader against the Philadelphia Phillies, according to Sportsnet's Ben Nicholson-Smith.
