Ex-MLB pitcher Haeger found dead after being wanted on suspicion of murder

Former major-league pitcher Charles Haeger was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound Saturday after being sought in connection to the death of his ex-girlfriend in a Phoenix suburb, police said, according to The Associated Press.

The body of the 37-year-old was discovered along the southern rim of the Grand Canyon around 4 p.m. local time.

Police were seeking Haeger on suspicion of the murder and aggravated assault of Danielle Breed, Sgt. Ben Hoster of the Scottsdale Police Department said in a statement.

Investigators determined Breed's roommate heard gunshots when he returned home Friday and was confronted by Haeger as he exited the victim's bedroom, Hoster said.

"Haeger then pointed the handgun at the roommate. The roommate quickly escaped out of the back of the residence, and he was able to get a neighbor to call 911," Hoster added.

Haeger last pitched in the majors in 2010 when he was a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers. He also played for the Chicago White Sox and San Diego Padres. Over parts of five seasons, Haeger went 2-7 with a 6.40 ERA in 83 innings.
