The San Francisco Giants designated outfielder Hunter Pence for assignment Sunday as a corresponding move after acquiring infielder Daniel Robertson from the Tampa Bay Rays, the team announced.

Pence, 37, returned to the Bay Area after an impressive 83-game stint with the Texas Rangers in 2019, during which he posted a .910 OPS and made the American League All-Star team.

The veteran struggled - hitting .096/.161/.250 with two home runs and six RBIs in 56 plate appearances - after signing a one-year, $3-million deal with the Giants in February.

Pence won two World Series with the Giants in 2012 and 2014. He also finished with down-ballot MVP votes twice (2013, 2014) during his first run with San Francisco.

Robertson, who was acquired from the Rays for a player to be named later or cash considerations, will report to the Giants' alternate site.

The 26-year-old is a former first-round pick, hitting .231/.340/.352 over his career with 16 home runs, 32 doubles, and 72 RBIs in three MLB seasons.
