Red Sox trade Moreland to Padres
The Boston Red Sox have traded first baseman Mitch Moreland to the San Diego Padres for outfielder Jeisson Rosario and infielder Hudson Potts, the Padres announced on Sunday.
Moreland is hitting .328/.430/.746 with eight home runs and 21 RBIs in 22 games this season.
He hit .251/.332/.471 with 64 home runs, 78 doubles, and 226 RBIs in four seasons with Boston. Moreland won a World Series with the Red Sox in 2018.
The 34-year-old is owed the remainder of his prorated $2.5-million salary for this season and has a $3-million club option available for 2021.
San Diego selected Potts in the first round of the 2016 draft. He was the team's No. 16-ranked prospect before Sunday's trade, according to MLB Pipeline.
The infielder hit .240/.302/.423 with 17 home runs and 65 RBIs in the minors last season.
Rosario is an outfielder who ranked No. 19 in San Diego's system. The 20-year-old hit .242/.372/.314 with 35 RBIs and 114 strikeouts in 120 games at High-A Lake Elsinore in 2019.
The Red Sox called up their No. 3 prospect, Bobby Dalbec, to replace Moreland on the active roster. Dalbec made his MLB debut on Sunday against the Washington Nationals.
It's the second trade made by Padres general manager A.J. Preller in the last two days. San Diego acquired reliever Trevor Rosenthal from the Kansas City Royals on Saturday.
Boston also traded pitchers Brandon Workman and Heath Hembree to the Philadelphia Phillies on Aug. 21.
